WOMEN LEADERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
it’s Women in Construction Month, and we're highlighting inspiring women who are leaders in the industry. These trailblazers are demonstrating the diverse opportunities available to women in the trades. By sharing their experiences and achievements, we hope to empower and inspire other women to pursue careers in construction. As well as celebrating these women's accomplishments, these stories serve as beacons of inspiration for those seeking to break barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.

A word from Teresa:
My name is Teresa Roberts, a wife, mother of 2 biological children (1Girl/1 boy) and 2 stepchildren (2 boys). Co-owner with my husband on 2 HVAC contracting companies and 1 HVAC Consulting business. It was never my intention to be in the trade, I find myself in it now for the past 27 years. It began in the late 90's when my brother decided to open a Residential HVAC company. I was intrigued and wanted in on the start-up. Of course, coming on board without prior AC knowledge made for a struggle handling calls and understanding exactly what we were billing for and/or receiving. I located a HVAC basics book then began studying in between tasks at the office and at home. While in the office I would take the book out to the warehouse with some tools to dissect Air Handlers, Condensers, and package units brought back to the office for disposal. Using my basics book in addition to occasional help from my brother I was quickly catching on and requested hands on experience in the field. I became an all-in-one asset to the company. Handling calls, billing, receiving and helping in the field with installations, service calls and major repairs. Everyday becoming more knowledgeable on basic components, duct work, duct sizing and troubleshooting systems. I began taking classes on performing Manual J and D calculations. While continuing to study and as time progressed, I decided to take the State of Florida exam to qualify the business. After completing this I became an Energy Rater, Mold inspection/Remediation Certified and obtained LEED Green Associate Certification. After leaving the company I became employed at a Manufacturer for a short while and then to a private Contractor. This is where I had to begin again, proving my worth and value working my way up to eventually running a 5-person office with approximately 20 service techs and 6 installation crews. Leaving there after almost 10 years to get my consulting business off of the ground and looking for fill in jobs led me to managing HVAC for a portfolio of 13 Charter schools and commissioning a public-School Smart project. Fast forward to today as co-owner of a HVAC business in early 2023 and yet a second one in late 2023. During my early years in the industry starting out with my brother, it was never easy having small children while in this unforgiving industry. The children could not understand why mommy was picking them up at after care wearing work boots, hair all a mess and dirt all over her clothes. They too made a sacrifice giving up summer trips due to the restraints. Today my children are my employees and have expressed how impressed they were with my tenacity and desire to provide as they can now see the end result. I can only hope my journey has empowered my daughter in knowing she can do anything, and her mind is her only limitation. I already see greatness in her. I hope it doesn't take her half as long to find her passion and achieve goals she sets for herself. When it comes to "women in a man's world" we always say "times are different now" but are they? The only way to make a change is to be the change. Be fierce, Be Confident and Be Humble.
